Dean Ottino, the McCormick Dean, and members of his staff updated students on McCormick affairs and answered questions. Cheese, crackers, fruit, and wine were provided.
Summer 2008: Ice Cream Social
The social commmittee organize this summer event for McCormick graduate students. Students enjoyed ice cream treats on the east patio of Tech.
Spring 2008: Charity Drive
MGLC placed boxes in each departmental office to collect canned goods and clothing which were then donated to the Evanston Salvation Army. Congratulations to Biomedical Engineering for collecting the most goods and thanks to everyone who donated!
Spring 2008: Preparing Future Faculty Seminar (work/life balance)
This event was organized by the academic committee and the McCormick dean's office. The seminar topic was balancing teaching, research, service, and life as a faculty member. The seminar was given by Northwestern faculty members Seda Memik, Michael Peshkin, and Yip-Wah Chung. Jimmy John's sandwiches and beverages were provided.

The academic committee organized this talk by Thy Nguyen of UCS. Thy compiled and presented data on where recent Mcormick graduate students are working titled, "Where have all the grad students gone?" The reports are available here:

Spring 2008: Interdisciplinary Seminar Series with Dr. Justine Cassell
The academic committee organized this talk by
Dr. Justine Cassell from the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science department and the Center for Technology and Social Behavior on the tpoic of technology and communication. Refreshments were served.
Spring 2008: Networking Workshop
MGLC and InNUvation co-hosted a networking workshop featuring career coach and NU alumnus Rob Sullivan. Rob discussed the importance of networking, how to network, and how to maintain and utilize your network followed by a demonstration utilizing audience members. Funding was provided by a TGS Community Building Grant, the Center for Student Involvement, and the McCormick Office of Corporate Relations.
Winter 2008: McCormick Art Fair
MGLC hosted an art far for McCormick graduate students sponsored by a community building grant from The Graduate School and MGLC. McCormick graduate students were invited to submit artwork in three categories and all McCormick graduate students attended the event to socialize and vote for their favorite artwork. Food from Olive Mountain, Koi, and Papa John's as well as beer, wine, and soda were provided to all atendees and cash prizes were provided to the art competition winners. In addition, select winning artwork was displayed in Tech.
Winter 2008: Interdisciplinatry Seminar Series with Prof. Rudnicki
Professor John Rudnicki from the Mechanical Engineering department gave a talk entitled "Mechanics of Sports." Snacks were provided.
Fall 2007: Preparing Future Faculty Seminar Series (Tenure)
This event was organized by the academic committee and the McCormick dean's office. The seminar topic was how the tenure process works for engineering faculty positions. Pizza was provided.
Fall 2007: McCormick Grad Student Happy Hour
This event was organized by the social committee. McCormick graduate students were invited to attend a happy hour in the ME conference room. Pizza, chips, beer, and soda were provided.
Fall 2007: Preparing Future Faculty Seminar Series (Interviewing)
This event was organized by the academic committee and the McCormick dean's office. The seminar topic was interviewing and the hiring process for engineering faculty positions. Pizza was provided.
Fall 2007: NU vs. Michigan football game tailgate
This event was organized by the social committee. McCormick graduate students and their friends were invited to tailgate before the NU vs. Michigan home football game. Games as well as grilled food, chips, beer, and soft drinks were provided.
Fall 2007: New student welcome lunch
This was an opportunity for the incoming McCormick graduate students to hear a talk from the McCormick Dean about what to expect from Northwestern University, the McCormick School, and MGLC. Lunch was provided.
Summer 2007: Ice cream social, ultimate frisbee tournament, and lawn games
The social committee organized this even for McCormick graduate students. Students gathered on Long Field to enjoy ice cream while participating in an ultimate frisbee tournament as well as playing lawn games such as croquet, corn hole, and bocce ball.
Summer 2007: Careers in quantitative finance for Ph.D. students seminar
The professional committee organized this event for Ph.D. students in McCormick, economics, business, and all other related science, engineering, and mathematics fields. Dr. Manohar Murthi, a Northwestern alumnus from the Chemical Engineering department and an employee at the DRW Trading Group in Chicago, gave a talk about careers in quantitative methods in finance. Refreshments and food were provided.
Summer 2007: Bar-B-Q on lakefill with games and prizes
The professional commmittee organized this summer social event for McCormick graduate students. Students enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks. Students also participated in a three-legged race and a water balloon toss competition.

This was the second interdisciplinary seminar series organized by the academic committee. Prof. Olmstead from the ESAM department gave a talk titled, "Shear band formation in high strength materials: an applied mathematical approach to an engineering problem." Food was provided.
Winter 2007: Student services fair
The professional committee organized this event to help McCormick graduate students gain an awareness for the professional resources available to them on campus. Representitives from the Office of Fellowships, University Career Services (UCS), NU Library, InNUvation, Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA), The Graduate School (TGS), The Graduate Student Association (GSA), McCormick Office of Corporate Relations (MOCR), Searle Center for Teaching Excellence, Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), and McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC) were in attendance to advertise their services and answer students' questions. Popcorn and cotton candy were provided.

This was the first interdisciplinary seminar series organized by the academic committee. Prof. Gray from the CEE department gave a talk titled, "Nanotechnology, Energy, and the Environment." Food was provided.
Winter 2007: Kick-off social event at Prairie Moon
This kick-off event was planned by the social commmittee. The goal was to create a fun atmosphere for McCormick graduate students to hang out while starting to spread the good word about MGLC. The event was held at Prairie Moon and included a trivia game with prizes. Food and drinks were provided.
